SUMMARY:The Future of Computer Vision Lies in Its Roots: The Science of I
 ntelligence
DESCRIPTION:Let's get together\, eat pizza\, and hear from local experts
in CV and AI. In this event we hear from Kush Tiwary about the Principles
of Visual Intelligence. As usual\, we will also hear lightning talks and
announcements from local companies who are hiring in our field.\n\nKush
(https://www.kushagratiwary.com/) is a final-year PhD student at MIT stud
ying how intelligence emerges through embodied interactions\, and buildin
g artificial intelligence systems capable of making novel discoveries. Hi
s work has been published and exhibited at multiple international confere
nces\, and locally such as at TedX Boston\, the Museum of Science\, and t
he MIT Museum.\n\nAbstract: \nComputer vision is facing an unusual kind o
f existential crisis: its own success. Over the past decade\, advances in
artificial intelligence have transformed what machines can see and do\,
from object recognition and 3D reconstruction to video generation and aut
onomous systems. As traditional tasks and benchmarks become increasingly
saturated\, an important question emerges: Where should computer vision g
o next?\n\nIn this talk\, I will argue that this apparent crisis is a boo
n in disguise. It presents an opportunity to return to the deeper scienti
fic questions that helped give rise to the field: What are the principles
behind visual intelligence and what is the "process" by which intelligen
ce emerged? It also presents an opportunity to be more ambitious with bui
lding intelligence that can see things we can't rather than pursuing bett
er benchmarks. Drawing inspiration from evolution and ecology\, artificia
l life\, and the broader science of intelligence\, I will explore how the
se questions might shape the future of computer vision.\n\n---\nMeeting L
ocation: BU CDS-1750 (Center for Computing & Data Sciences\, 17th floor)
 at 665 Commonwealth Ave\, Boston\, MA 02215.\n\nAgenda:\n6:00 - 6:40: Net
 working & Pizza\n6:40 - 7:25: Kush's talk\n7:25 - 7:35: Lightning talks (
speakers TBD)\n7:35 - 7:45: 1 min pitches from the audience. Need help? L
 ooking for a job? This is your chance!\n7:45 - 8:00: More networking\n\nT
he venue:\nIt's on the 17th floor of the "Jenga Building" at BU. And yes\
, the views are spectacular.\nRegistration with your full legal name is r
equired to attend the event.\n\nParking/Commute Options:\nThere are many
on-street parking spots available along Commonwealth Avenue\, as well as
on nearby side streets. Most are free after 6pm. https://en.parkopedia.co
